The challenges faced by hospitalist program can be multifold. We can help with a stable program that is facing one or two of the challenges (e.g. recruitment issues, length of stay issues etc.) or can help with turning around a severely distressed hospitalist program. Most of the challenges faced by the hospitalist programs have the following reasons-

  • Inadequate census management

  • Physicians not performing at the top of their license but rather spending a lot of time on activities that do not bring value patient care but are time consuming never the less( this leads to more amount of ‘perceived work performed’ and less amount of ‘actual work performed’),

  • Lack of ‘team spirit’ and motivation of the hospitalists

  • Nonexistent or complicated incentive systems for the hospitalists.

  • Breakdown of trust and communication between hospitalists and admin teams

  • Absence of servant leadership in the group and malalignment of the program operations from the balance sheet.

  • One of the other very important issues frequently seen is too much resource allocation where it is not needed and too little resource allocation where there is actually a strain on resources
